This adorable and easy felt heart garland can be made quickly. A perfect sewing craft for a beginner, tested out by my sewing student last week just to be sure. Any mantel, wall, or stair case will be picture perfect for Valentine’s Day. Share the love with this no fail felt craft.
Way back in elementary school we often made paper crafts in the learning center. At Christmas, paper strips in various colors were at our disposal to staple into fun bird or orb shapes. As we played we discovered many shapes that could be made with the paper strips, including hearts. Taking that paper craft concept and using felt is a way to create a more durable craft. Fortunately, I managed to come up with a tutorial for all of you. Enjoy and let me know how your garland turned out!

Instructions
Step 1:
Pick out 9×12 inch felt craft sheets in colors you like. Red, pink and white are the colors I am going with to coordinate with the heart pillows I made a while back. See link to Valentine’s Day pillow covers below.
Step 2:
With a ruler, measure out one inch sections horizontally along the craft sheet and mark with dressmaker’s chalk or disappearing ink pen for marking fabric.
Step 3:
Cut fabric sheet down the center, vertically with sewing scissors. Each half will be 4.5 x 12 inches long.
Step 4:
Place marked sides together, lining up edges so it is even. Pin along one long side to hold both felt pieces in place.
Step 5:
Sew along pinned edge of felt with a 1/4-1/2 inch seam allowance. Use coordinating thread to hide the stitches, or high contrast thread to accent the stitching. It is just personal preference.
Step 6:
Once sewn, pull apart the unsewn edges all the way and realign them so now the marked sides of the felt sheet are facing out. Line up edges and pin together.
Step 7:
Sew along pinned edge with 1/4 to 1/2 inch seam allowance. You should now have a heart shaped cylinder.
Step 8:
Use fabric sheers to cut along marked lines. You will end up with 12 hearts.
Repeat the process with the other colors of felt.
Step 9:
Thread the yarn or embroidery floss onto a large eyed needle and string through the left side, center and the right side of each heart in what ever pattern you like. I would recommend making the length of yarn at least 6-8 feet long. Space hearts as desired, cut yarn shorter if you want the hearts closer together. Once they are all threaded, or you threaded as many as you want, hang the garland from the mantle, a wall or a stair case.
The Reveal
How simply adorable is this easy felt heart garland? I love how quick and basic this sewing project is and yet it looks super cute.
No doubt the heart garland will get a bit squished when stored for the next year. Not to worry. The soft felt can be reshaped time and again to look just right. I mean, I would still avoid purposely cramming it in a tight ball to store because I can’t guarantee the hearts wouldn’t wrinkle a bit. Wrinkled hearts on display would make for a sad Valentine’s Day decoration indeed. So, care for your hearts and they will last for years.
Layering my easy DIY felt heart garland with this cute one I picked up a few years ago to adds more interest on the mantel. Do those chalkboard candle holders and floral heart wreath look familiar? See the links below for tutorials on those projects also.
